Zadar

Where the wedding is

You will already be here. Zadar is small enough to cross on foot and old enough that a Roman forum sits open in the middle of it. Everything below is within a twenty minute walk of the Old Town.

01The Sea Organ, Zadar

The Sea Organ

White marble steps running down into the sea, with pipes hidden underneath. The waves and the wind push air through them, so the sea itself plays music. Go at sunset, sit on the steps, and stay for a while.

02Greeting to the Sun, Zadar

Greeting to the Sun

A glass circle twenty two metres across, set into the pavement beside the Sea Organ. It drinks sunlight all day and then lights up once it gets dark.

03The Roman Forum, Zadar

The Roman Forum

Ancient Rome, right in the middle of town. Zadar’s Forum is the largest on the eastern Adriatic, with 2,000-year-old ruins you can wander through on your way to coffee, dinner, or the sea.

04Church of St. Donatus, Zadar

Church of St. Donatus

A round ninth century church built out of recycled Roman stone, some of it still carved. The acoustics inside are extraordinary, which is why concerts are held in it.

05The Land Gate, Zadar

The Land Gate

The Venetian gate of 1543, winged lion and all, and for centuries the only way into the city by land. Worth walking through rather than past.
