Four hours from Zadar
The furthest of the four, and the one worth building extra days around rather than squeezing in. Some flights from New York land here directly.

Two kilometres of wall, walked in one full circuit around the old town, with the rooftops on one side and open sea on the other. Go early or late; the middle of the day is hot and crowded.

The main street, paved in limestone that four centuries of feet have polished to a shine. It runs the whole length of the old town and everything else leads off it.

A fortress on its own rock thirty seven metres above the sea, just outside the walls. Built, the story goes, in three months to keep the Venetians out.

Take the cable car up the hill behind the city for sweeping views over Dubrovnik, the Adriatic, and the islands beyond. There’s also a restaurant at the top, making sunset a great time to go.

A short boat hop from the old harbour. Botanical garden, swimming spots, and peacocks that have the run of the place and know it.

See Dubrovnik from the water. Paddle beneath the city walls, along the rocky coast, and past hidden swimming spots. Book around sunset for an especially beautiful view of the Old Town.

If you watched the show, this one’s worth it. Explore the real-life King’s Landing and visit filming locations throughout Dubrovnik’s Old Town. There are plenty of guided tours to book online.
